Over the past decade, Bulgaria’s IT sector has experienced rapid growth, offering high salaries and fast career development for professionals. However, in the last two years, the market has started to shift. This transformation is driven by a combination of global economic instability, the war in Ukraine, inflation, and an oversaturation of entry-level programmers. As a result, job openings have decreased, and the profile of the desired employee has changed.

Today, tech companies in Bulgaria are no longer seeking just programmers with certificates from short-term courses. The focus is shifting toward professionals with experience and knowledge in advanced technological fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data, blockchain, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. Additionally, there is strong demand for experts in cloud technologies and DevOps, particularly those skilled in platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

This market evolution is a natural response to the rise of new technologies and automation across various industries – from healthcare and logistics to manufacturing. Organizations are increasingly looking for ways to boost efficiency and protect their data, which explains the growing need for highly specialized IT talent.

At the same time, there is a noticeable oversupply of junior professionals – individuals with basic programming skills in languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, but without deeper specialization. This situation is partly the result of many people retraining into the IT field, attracted by the sector’s favorable working conditions. While such qualifications once guaranteed a job, they are no longer sufficient in today’s competitive landscape.

Employers are now emphasizing practical experience, involvement in real projects, and the ability to solve real business problems. Certificates from quick programming courses are no longer enough without demonstrable expertise. In addition, speaking foreign languages beyond English has become a significant advantage for job candidates.

Industry experts note that the number of open positions in the IT sector has dropped by half – from approximately 10,000 in 2022 to around 5,000 by the end of 2024 and beginning of 2025. This further underscores the need for greater specialization and adaptability.

Despite the market slowdown, experts remain optimistic about the future. Emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and automation are creating new opportunities, and companies focused on innovation and maintaining a competitive edge will continue to invest in professionals who can offer expert-level solutions. For ambitious IT professionals, this means the path to a successful career requires continuous learning, hands-on experience, and the ability to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the market.
