Digital skills charity report (2021)

The pandemic is the biggest cause of digital disruption in the sector this year. The COVID-19 pandemic has led the sector to adopt digital technologies to remain relevant, help more people and develop new ways of working, obtain funding and provide services. While there has been an acceleration in some areas of the digital development of charitable organisations, there has been little progress in others.

The Digital Skills Report is its fifth year of existence and is an annual barometer of digital skills, attitudes and support needs across the sector. The report looked at the progress made on key elements in creating the right foundations for digital change, including understanding user needs, leadership, strategy and governance.

The report also aims to contribute to:

  • Understand the main trends in how the use of digital technologies by charitable organisations has changed over the past year so that you can compare your organisation.
  • Find out how other charitable organisations change their way of working and are developing their digital roadmaps at a time when we reach the next phase of the pandemic.
  • Monitoring progress over the past five years and what this means for the sector.
  • It measures areas where charities have skills gaps, but also what they need from forms of support such as
    funding, learning and development.
