ESSA presents Software Skills Strategy

In order to bridge the knowledge gaps in the ESSA (European Software Skills Alliance), Software Skills Strategy for Europe.

It provides answers to how to deal with the shortage of software professionals and the future demand for these skills on the labour market.

The strategy presents aspects and expert recommendations for training, upskilling and retraining individuals into professional software profiles, which will be highly sought in the future. It sets the direction of future work on three important pillars: training, education and validation. It is the starting point for the development of up-to-date, market-oriented VET curricula and programmes for software professions in 2022.

individuals should be trained through self-learning and work-based learning. The ESSA shall promote wider access to education by addressing the main barriers to training, upskilling and requalification of individuals into demand software profiles.

educate for applications. The ESSA shall support the development of flexible but widely applicable educational profiles together with specific curricula and programmes for vocational education and training relevant to software applications.

■ the cross-border validity of the supporting documents. The ESSA promotes international mobility by supporting transferable and EU-recognised learning outcomes.

Background

There are around 8 million ICT professionals in Europe, which is far behind the 20 million pledged by the European Commission. The European software sector is growing visibly — 45 % of the organisations surveyed estimate that they will need more developers in the next five years. Organisations would already need more experts for DevOps and technical profiles immediately. The ESSA aims to provide the learning instruments that people need to meet such a demand for software skills.
