Job losses and COVID-19: are teleworking, automation and tasks at work important? It is a report by the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training, which aims to provide an insight into the future of work and how trends and data have changed as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the European Union and the world.
The analysis in the report is based on the latest statistics combined with Cedefop skills forecasting data, focusing on the different effects that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on occupations, roles, sectors and industries. One important aspect is resilience: the report finds that the potential of teleworking offered by the profession and the risk of automation for a given role are greater, the more likely it is to lose the job. Even more importantly, the need for basic digital skills for all and the more advanced skills needed to work in the ICT sector: the analysis shows that job loss projections are significantly lower for countries and professions where ICT skills are needed.
Finally, the report provides recommendations that are not only based on the observations and results achieved during the work on the report, but also take into account EU Member States’ reforms and investments since 2022 under NextGenerationEU and the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
