In 2021, eSkills Malta published the results of its demand and supply monitor project in a report entitled ‘Report on monitoring ICT skills and supply demand. It provides an analysis of the demand and supply of Maltese ICT skills. As in most countries of the European Union, Malta faces similar challenges in terms of ICT skills, in particular a growing need for ICT professionals, but a shortage of ICT students. In addition, the report highlights another loophole: between the skills required in the sector and those taught by educational institutions.
The objective of this report is to guide and inform Maltese stakeholders in the area of skills, upskilling and training to ensure that the policies set out by the Maltese government, the eSkills Malta work programme and education institutions’ programmes are aligned with industry’s skills needs.
The analysis is based on in-depth research, consisting of a survey and interviews with key stakeholders from across Malta’s ICT sector. The project uses the European e-Competence Framework as a reference for competences and skills required in the ICT sector.
The key findings of the analysis of the data collected and interviews are divided into five categories:
- Demand and supply
- Education
- Training, skills and certification
- Professional organisations and recognition of professions
- Technologies
The full report is available in English below and provides an overview of the ICT situation in Malta across sectors and technological professions. The report looks at the current and future situation with regard to emerging technologies and makes recommendations on the way forward for society, businesses and stakeholders.
