The objective of this report is to present a state-of-the-art overview of the impact and opportunities of digitalisation on the world of work, and in particular how some trends triggered by this phenomenon (i.e. teleworking and the development of digital skills) are addressed through social dialogue and collective bargaining.
The report also includes an in-depth analysis of the Italian case, focusing on SMEs in the metallurgical sector (which includes both manufacturing and digital companies). The necessary research to achieve this objective has been carried out through mixed methods, i.e. desk research, semi-structured interviews, expert consultations. The following paragraphs give a brief overview of the key findings of the research carried out.
As regards the differences between SMEs and larger companies in terms of the use of digital technologies and workers’ digital skills, different reasons can be found:
- increased costs for digital technologies;
- uncertainty for businesses about data security;
- lack of risk orientation by management;
- low awareness of the benefits of digital technologies or lack of “efficiency”, i.e. trust of SME owners and employees in their productive use
