Strengthening the human factor in AI systems (2022)

Scientists from different disciplines have recently raised ethical, legal and social concerns about the notion of human intervention, control and oversight of AI systems.

To empower users in AI-mediated communication processes, this article introduces the concept of human active factor and the reasons why examples of contestability and redress mechanismsare needed to strengthen the active human factor.

The document states that AI policy should introduce rights for users to challenge or rectify AI-based decisions quickly. This right would strengthen individuals’ autonomy and fundamental rights in the digital age. The conclusion sets out the modalities of future theoretical and empirical research on the human active factor in times of ubiquitous AI.
