Recently, professionals from various disciplines have raised ethical, legal and social concerns about the notion of human intervention, control and oversight of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
To empower users in AI-mediated communication processes, this article introduces the concept of active human agency and why examples of contestability and redress mechanisms are needed to strengthen active human engagement.
The document argues that AI policy should introduce rights for users to challenge or rectify an AI-based decision quickly. This right would empower individual autonomy and strengthen fundamental rights in the digital age. The conclusion identifies avenues for future theoretical and empirical research on active human intervention in times of ubiquitous AI.
