Towards a green and digital future (JRC – 2022)

This study by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre looks at how the green and digital transitions can be successful.

Both the green and digital transitions are the political priorities of the European Commission that will shape our long-term future. While these two “twin” transitions can reinforce each other in many areas, they are not automatically aligned. For example, digital technologies have a significant environmental footprint that goes against the objectives of the green transition. A proactive and inclusive approach to managing the twin transition is therefore important to ensure its successful implementation.

Theaim of this study is to analyse how the European Union can ensure that these two transitions are mutually reinforcing. The study focuses on the five sectors with the highest greenhouse gas emissions:

(1) agriculture;

(2) buildings and construction;

(3) energy;

Energy-intensive industries; and

Transport and mobility.

Based on this analysis, the report outlines key requirements for the success of the European Union’s green and digital transitions.
