What is the future of Europe’s robotics? (2021)

This report, published in 2021 by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), presents the key findings and conclusions of the conference ‘What future for Europe’s robotics?’, held online on 27-29 January 2021.

The aim of the conference was to discuss the impact of robotics from a technical, economic and social perspective and to identify the main policy challenges to be addressed in the short and long term, also in light of the COVID-19 crisis and recovery.

The report presents the outcomes of the Conference’s panels and discussions and focuses on the following aspects:

  • the impact of robotisation on the economy, the future of work and employment;
  • the social impact, including the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence and robots;
  • interactions between humans and robots, especially in the field of education.

The key conclusions and the main part of the report provide recommendations to policy-makers, in particular to ensure that “no one is left behind” by introducing initiatives and investments in lifelong learning, digital infrastructure and different methodologies for interaction between humans and robots.
